I get some people commenting (and I’m sure more thinking) that I don’t really love my dogs because they are outside, working dogs rather than inside, pet dogs. I think this idea comes from the “fur mom” movement that says all dogs are basically people and deserve to live inside with us. But what about the dogs who don’t want to live inside? This is Daisy Duke. She’s 4 years old and has always chosen to be outside, unless she had puppies to protect. She is not a pet, but she is deeply loved. The idea that affection is missing in a working dog’s life doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.Daisy sought me out today. I didn’t track her down to force attention upon her. She waited until I was done checking the piglets and momma pig in the barn and watering my garden. Then she came down and gently impeded my path, sticking her head up on my hip. Then I grabbed my phone to share it with you! There is a difference between a dog demanding attention and a dog like Daisy asking nicely. Demanding doesn’t get you what you want, it gets you ignored- and that goes for both the livestock guardian dog AND the handler. Asking nicely works a whole lot better. Just some Anatolian Shepherd dogs and their piggy friends on a hot summer day. When it’s over 90°F, shade and water are the two most important things to prevent issues for our animals on pasture. A little morning moment with piglets, Bluebelle(5.5 mo), Rooney(16 mo) and Tessa(2.5 y). Tessa is a great mentor dog, even though she is young. When you have a solid mentor dog, it can work well to have two adolescent pups in training. However, this requires human supervision and intervention as necessary. Remember: Not every LGD wants to train a puppy, and just because they are willing, does not mean they are going to train a puppy correctly. Let’s talk about puppy coat! Specifically on a rough coat Anatolian Shepherd puppy. How is it different from a shorter coat pup? More “Velcro” to anything they can pick up- weeds, burrs, even tiny pieces of ancient broken chicken wire (I figured out what that was at the end). What are main “problem areas” you should watch?All areas with regular friction! Behind the ears, around the tail/back legs, and the collar area if they wear one.Warning signs:Nibbing/chewing on a particular spot. Check it out! Sometimes it’s nothing, sometimes it’s something bothering them caught in their coat.Do I need to brush my puppy?If you can’t get your fingers down to their skin, or part their hair and see to the skin, yes! *You can brush and velocity blow dry them out- but always use a conditioner spray first to protect their hair!*Do they need a bath?Unless they are soaked to the skin in something nasty or having trouble releasing their coat with the spring/summer shed out- nope! They will self-clean with a little help from brushing.While you’re here- is a rough coat really an Anatolian Shepherd??Yes! Guard hair up to 4” is in the AKC breed standard! Here’s a little reel of them exploring the back pasture with our new #DogWatch fence setup inside our field fence. This new system operates on a different frequency than the other invisible fence systems on the market, which allows us to have it in this pasture that shares a fence line with our #SportDog100A system and the next door neighbor’s invisible fence system that operates on that same frequency. This prevented us from having a totally secure perimeter until now. We are thrilled to have a larger space open to our dogs in a safer way.#anatolianshepherd #montana #apexanatolians

We get asked about heat cycles a lot, so here is a side by side comparison of a first heat cycle (Day 2) and a mature heat cycle (day 10). Every dog is unique, but in general:First heat cycles can be harder to detect because the vulva swelling can be significantly less than a mature female.If you run intact working females, monitor how the males are treating them! The nose knows, and no nose is more attuned to female dog’s hormone cycling than a male dog.Tip: bring a white paper towel with you and dab the vulva gently if you see red discharge, lock her down for 30 days!Got more questions?
