Beginnings
Ares came from the Seattle, Washington area where he lived on an agro-tourism type farm protecting miniature dairy goats. Ares became available as an almost-adult when it became clear that he would no longer tolerate shenanigans from his owner’s pet dog. As is often the case, the working dog is the one to go.
After a video conference and some movement videos, we decided to take a chance and bring Ares to Montana.
We selected Ares for our program due to his early stock reliability, balanced temperament, and smooth movement. We were hopeful that his health testing would return positive results (which they did!).
Now
Ares has a wonderful temperament. He has visited our Veterinarian a few times, and has gone to some local pet and feed stores. He is gentle with other dogs in town, and he appreciates lots of pets from strangers when he is off-duty.
At home, Ares is very serious about his job and can usually be found supervising the other dogs’ activities. He is a big boy, 135 lb at 5 years old. We are grateful to have him with our herd.
Temperament/Personality
Ares is a strong, fair leader in our working pack. He still enjoys rolling around and playing with the younger dogs, and he does take the helm to correct puppy mistakes with the stock. He’s a snuggler if he knows you, and a favorite of all our visitors who come to meet the dogs!
Color/Size
Ares is a dark brindle, black mask dog with a medium-length coat.
He stands 31″ at the withers and weighs 135 lb.
Favorite Things/What She Brings to the Program
Our favorite thing about Ares is how adaptable he is. He came here at 20 months old to a completely new environment with different stock and new humans- including children. Ares didn’t just make do, he settled in and got right to work! He has given this adaptable spirit to many of his puppies.

With our growing grizzly bear population in Montana, the media has taken notice. Apex Anatolians was recognized and featured in an article on coexisting with griz in Montana, and Ares’ photo landed in thousands of email inboxes to promote it!
Ares in the Top 5 NOHS in 2023
Attending a single dog show cluster in 2023 earned Ares 50 owner-handler points. This earned him a spot in the Top 5 national ranking of owner-handled Anatolian Shepherd Dogs!
